Columbia Pacific Consulting Ltd. prepares economic loss assessments and expert evidence for civil litigation. This work involves personal information, including financial and medical records, about people involved in legal claims. This policy explains how we collect, use, share and protect that information. It applies to all of our employees and contractors, and reflects our obligations under British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act.
What we collect and why
We collect personal information only with consent, and only what we need to:
- check for conflicts of interest before accepting a file; and
- prepare our economic assessments, which can require earnings, tax, pension and medical records.
Most of this information is provided to us by the lawyer or insurer who retains us.
How we protect it
Privacy is the default in how we work. We use industry-standard encryption and other security safeguards to protect the personal information we hold.
When we share it
- With client consent. For example, our report is delivered to counsel and, through the litigation process, to the court and other parties.
- Where the law requires it. This includes disclosure required under the rules of court. We do not respond to government requests unless we believe in good faith that the law requires a response. We also require a warrant or court order before disclosing personal information to a government authority.
Keeping and returning information
We keep personal information only as long as it is needed for the file and to meet our legal and professional obligations. After that, we destroy it securely.
Clients may ask us to return or destroy personal information at any time by contacting the economist on the file or our Privacy Officer. If we must keep some records, for example because a matter is before the court, we will explain why.
Our website
Our website does not collect personal information through forms. It uses Google Analytics cookies to understand how the site is used, and it loads fonts from Google’s servers. You can block cookies in your browser settings. If you email or call us, we use your information only to respond.
